THE
LEGENDARY TEXAS
SERIES

LEGENDARY TEXAS began life in 1985 as a newspaper column carried by over 20 newspapers throughout Texas, in honor of the Texas Sesquicentennial. Five years later it became a radio program under the terms of an educational grant carried by 61 stations and ran for 500 episodes. Each one of the 500 stories told about some person, event, place or thing that had an impact on Texas.

Over the next five years, five books of fifty stories each appeared with the LEGENDARY TEXAS label. These “first editions”, in the 81/2” x 11” soft format with tan covers and taped spines are long out-of-print and rarely seen. In 1997, Wheelock Press began issuing “second editions” in a smaller format, with moderate editing and different illustrations. These also are now rarely found.

Then, in 2005, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the first publication, commemorative issues of all five of the original books were issued in a combination of the Wheelock Press editing and a return to the larger format with reproductions of the original covers in blue with taped spines. Each book may have several duplicate stories from other books. These are still available in limited numbers. When these are gone, they too will become collectors’ items.
